Silent Installations

The InstallAnywhere program provided with SystemVue supports a silent installation mode. A normal (non-silent) installation receives the necessary input from the user installing the software in the form of responses to prompts in dialog boxes. However, a silent installation does not display prompts for inputs. InstallAnywhere supports a silent mode that has no user interaction, and runs either using the defaults provided for a complete install or using a response file that contains the values for various InstallAnywhere variables, which control the installation.

Silent Installation Overview

Here is an overview on how to set up and run a silent installation.

  1. If needed, run a silent uninstallation beforehand to remove SystemVue.
  2. Run the SystemVue<version>.exe utility using arguments for a silent installation (see below).

Running a Silent Installation

To run a silent installation, run the SystemVue<version>.exe utility using the silent installation arguments shown below:

  1. On the client PC, verify that SystemVue installation folder does not already exist. There should not be a _C:\Program Files\ SystemVue<version>_ folder since the silent installation process is not expecting it to be there. If SystemVue has been installed, uninstall it before you continue.
  2. On the client PC, open a Command Prompt or DOS prompt window. In a command prompt, change to the folder that where SystemVue<version>.exe is. The location of the SystemVue<version>.exe can be on a server.

    Note

    When a silent installation is running, you won't see any confirmation that the installer is running. However, the process monitor will show _SystemVue_install.exe_ processes running in the background. If you are running on Windows 7 or Windows Vista, then you will need administrator privileges to install.

  3. On the client PCs, perform one of the following actions to run a silent installation of SystemVue:

Note

Silent installation of SystemVue installs the License Setup Wizard. However, if the license setup is required, the License Setup Wizard is launched on the first run of SystemVue.

  • Complete Silent Install
    • To perform a complete silent installation without requiring any user interaction, type the following command from the command line:
      SystemVue<version>.exe -i silent
  • Custom Silent Install
    • The custom silent installation gets its input from the response file installvariables.properties created during a custom installation. To perform a custom silent installation without requiring any user interaction, create a response file then type the following command from the command line specifying the path to the response file:
      SystemVue<version>.exe -f c:\tmp\your_response_file.txt -i silent

Creating Your Own Response File

When a normal installation runs, the inputs to prompts that are entered manually into dialog boxes are automatically recorded to a response file. By default, all of the variables defined in your installation are recorded. A response file is always generated after the successful completion of an installation. InstallAnywhere creates this file when the installation exits, storing the values of the applicable properties in the file. This is useful for saving a record of a specific installation execution session that can later be reused in a silent or custom installation.

This response file is a plain text file that uses a simple key=value format. If you want to change the settings in a particular response file, you can edit the response file directly or create your own from scratch.

The properties in the response file looks like following:

INSTALLER_UI=silent
USER_INSTALL_DIR=c:\Program Files\ SystemVue<version>
CHOSEN_INSTALL_SET=complete
USER_SELECTED_FOLDER=c:\users\myuser
USER_DEFAULT_HOME=users\myuser
USER_HOME_FOLDER=c:\users\myuser

  • INSTALLER_UI allows you to specify the installer mode in the properties file, negating the need to use the -i silent command-line switch.
  • USER_INSTALL_DIR is the location where you wish to install SystemVue. You must use double back slash in the path (c:\Program Files\ SystemVue<version>)
  • CHOSEN_INSTALL_SET can be set to a value of either complete or custom.
    If you set it to "complete", you don't need to add the CHOSEN_INSTALL_FEATURE_LIST variable. The "complete" selection will install all of the SystemVue modules.
    If you select "custom", you need to set the CHOSEN_INSTALL_FEATURE_LIST.
  • USER_DEFAULT_HOME is the location where you wish to save your configuration files and projects.
  • CHOSEN_INSTALL_FEATURE_LIST allows you to specify one or more items separated by commas.

Troubleshooting

The most effective way to troubleshoot errors with the silent install/uninstall process is to run the same type of installation in normal or visual mode.

Uninstall Procedure

  1. Select Start > All Program > SystemVue<version> > Uninstall SystemVue <version>
  2. The Uninstall dialog box appears. Select Uninstall Product and select Next to proceed and completely uninstall SystemVue <version> from your system.

Note: To completely uninstall SystemVue from your PC, delete the SystemVue install folder (default:C:\Program Files\ SystemVue<version>) and the following
registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Agilent > SystemVue<version>.

In case you get the error during uninstallation: "Fatal Error: The application has unexpectedly quit.", follow these steps:

  1. Stop the uninstallation process.
  2. Delete the SystemVue installation directory and reboot your system.
  3. Delete the contents of C:\Program Files (x86)\Zero G Registry\ directory if you are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista and C:\Program Files\Zero G Registry\ directory if you are using Windows XP. Note that the Zero G Registry directory is hidden by default.
  4. Delete the contents of C:\Windows\Temp\ directory.
  5. Delete SystemVue 2012.06 directory from the Windows Start menu (Click Start -> All Programs -> SystemVue 2012.06).

Running a Silent Un-installation

To run silent un-installation on a client PC, start the "SystemVue2012.06 Un-installation Support Files.exe" which is located in your un-installation directory. For example,

On 64-bit system, use the following command:

64bit mode : "C:\Program Files\SystemVue2012.06\SystemVue2012.06_x64 Uninstall Files\ SystemVue2012.06_x64.exe" -i silent
32bit mode: "C:\Program Files (x86)\SystemVue2012.06\SystemVue2012.06 Uninstall Files\ SystemVue2012.06.exe" -i silent

On 32-bit system, use the following command:

"C:\Program Files\SystemVue2012.06\SystemVue2012.06 Uninstall Files\ SystemVue2012.06.exe" -i silent

The silent uninstall process does not provide any feedback or status message that un-installation is running. You can check the Windows Task Manager for the javaw.exe process to ensure that un-installation is running.. Once the un-installation is complete, javaw.exe exits.

Installing FlexNet USB Key (dongle) Driver

USB hardware key check

Before performing this procedure, you must ensure that you have the correct USB Hard Key. For GENESYS 2009.04 and later, a new style hardware key is used. The new hardware key is identified with a number on it, which appears as "ID-9-xxx...". If your USB hardware key shows a four or five digit number after "S/N" on it, this is an old style key and will not work with GENESYS 2009.04 and later software.

    Situation 1: No Drivers Loaded:
  4. Hit Cancel and in the next window, hit Finish. Go to the next section to start the installation of the dongle driver.
    Situation 2: One or more drivers previously installed.
    The machine may already have earlier versions of the dongle driver installed,

    In the above screen shot, drivers 6.7, 8, and 9 are installed. Drivers 6.7, and 8 may be there for a reason. Remove FlexId 9 because this needs to be updated. In other words, make sure that only "FLEXid9 Drivers" check box is selected. This requires a reboot.

Language Pack Installation and Usage

The Genesys Language Pack provides local language support for Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), and Russian in Genesys menu picks.

The following are the installation steps:
